Water levels (stage) at the sampling stations were recorded using Campbell Scientific CR10 digital data loggers with Belfort FW-1 strip paper charts as backup. Logger data were downloaded from the remote stations via cellular modems. When digitally logged data were not available, the hydrograph charts were digitized.

Due to a lack of flow-control structures at the monitoring stations, runoff rates and volumes as a function of stage must be estimated for each of the stations. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality used a USGS model to calculate this relationship (rating curve) based on field measurements taken from 1994 to 2002.
